Have two Orion's one super bright backlight the other not so much. Both
start up fine and look good once going but one is for sure not as bright.
So swapped the A9 boards thinking cap problem. makes no difference darker
one backlight is still darker. Not bad but just not as bright.?I opened
front panels to check and both LCD's are identical and original. On the
brighter one the PCB that the LCD attaches to is dated 2003 and is white. On
the darker one it is 2004 and green. I see one component that is different.
could be more.?
Question really is there anything wrong? I was repairing the A9 board for
the Darker screen Orion and? now wonder if anything is wrong OR could it be
the LCD needs to be replaced?Thoughts please73Jon N8MUS

Your issue is to the display itself. As long as there are no dead pixels or
lines, the display is OK.

There are a few recommendations on various sites regarding this issue.
However, I have had excellent results replacing only the illuminator with
devices I obtain from ?LCD Parts?.

I have used these in Orion?s, Icom 756 series and so on with excellent
results.

two Orion's One bright backlight one not that bright by comparison. both
start the same and look good once up and going. but darker back light is
always darker. So thought A9 board. so to test swapped the boards between
the two. Results unchanged bright Orion still bright and darker one still
darker. ????LCD? also read VE7TK information about logic board c700? I am
leaning toward the LCD but hate to go to that effort if it is something
else.At this point since Screen is still good do not want to do anything but
Still would love to have both bright!

Gary,Checked the website you listed. I am not following what you mean by
illuminator. I see the LED CCFL replacement kits as well as CCFL
replacements.... Is that what you are talking about??Jon

Yes, the replacements are one in the same.

I don?t recall which one I use in the Orion?s I repaired but it is one of
the shorter ones.

I had the luxury of time since I did not need the Orion at the time. Thus I
could remove the old illuminator and measure it to order it. The replacement
came in about 3 days from order.

Ten Tec uses a drive circuit that is not compatible with the LED
replacements so it is of benefit to buy the illuminator with t he supplied
power supply board. That board is designed to work off 12 volts, which is
readily available in the Orion?s.
