I would appreciate a copy of the full manual too. I passed along a copy of a
.pdf file that has an alignment procedure for the Paragon. I haven't tried the
alignment yet on my Paragon so don't know if it's good or not.

The complete 585 manual will have schematics and circuit descriptions for
each board, much better than just the "operating" section which is often
what is found. In addition to the original manual, I have a copy in .pdf
form, but it is 35MB large, a bit much for emailing, but I recall I
downloaded that from the web, so search a bit. If you cannot find anything,
drop me an email and I'll see if I can post a link through DropBox or
something where you could retrieve it. There was no separate service manual,
but the complete manual is about as close as you can get to one and has lots
of alignment information as well as complete diagrams, circuit board
layouts, etc.
You may just have poor connections on jumpers between boards from a rig that
hasn't been used, so that would be the first thing to check, and easy to do.
However, most likely yours has the dreaded "loop" problems where solder
joints on the RF portions of the major and minor loop boards cause
instability or even failure for the PLL to lock. There are lots of posts
about this, some where you determine which board is at fault based on
whether the problems exist only on some bands or all of them, and many onhow
to remedy the issue. Often just reflowing the solder on the affected boards
will help, at least temporarily, but I found I had to basically remove the
old solder and apply fresh to get a long term fix.
I think you are going to love the paragon when you get it going. Besides
being one of what I think is the prettiest rigs ever made, the operating
interface is the best of any radio I have used. You'll want to get a Geihl
chip, if it doesn't have one, or seek an N4PY chip to replace the original
processing chip as either add some fantastic features like band-stacking
registers that make the rig perform like a very modern radio. If yours
doesn't have the optional RS232 board installed, those are rare but well
worth having if you want to implement computer control and link to a
computer log. Other options, like the voice board and an FM board are also
nice to have, but also rare.

I acquired a very pristine (looking) 585 last weekend at a hamfest. It has
absolutely no cosmetic flaws or evidence of use/wear. Maybe that's because
it
suffers from a sporadic failure mode that corrupts/distorts both received
and
transmitted audio. This Paragon is in such good condition cosmetically, that
I'd sure like to restore dependable electrical function. Internal visual
inspection suggests that the radio is "factory fresh", with no obvious
evidence
of anyone having mucked around in it.
I downloaded the online 585 manual, but it's devoid of any schematics or
even a
flow diagram like I've found in the manuals for my many other TenTec
radios.
Can anyone provide me with, or point to a source for schematics or flow
diagram
useful for troubleshooting?
