Mike:

Glad that resolved that part of the problem.   As to making it smoother, this is usually a component or artifact of the encoder. Some are just smoother than others.   I don't know anyway to improve them.  If you remove the rubber ring, this will expose the screw holes to the set screws.  Loosen them, pull the knob off.  I think there is a bushing on the front panel for this shaft.  A small drop of silicon based oil might help.

My Eagle is a very very old unit and it has survived lots of use and abuse.  In fact, I used it to beta test all the versions of firmware, included many pre-release versions.   Later it was in my truck for a few years.  Now I carry it back and forth between the desk, the shop and our travel trailer.  Still hangs in there and does a great job.  It has been used at Field Day in the years past and suffered one fatality the result of using it on 80M PSK and the operator switched to 20M PSK and didn't bother to change the external tuner.  After a couple of hours operating, it stopped transmitting.  It was bloody hot too!   Oh well, a pair of new PA devices, $45 found on Amazon, and it was back in business.  Darn easy to repair.

Bob,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I tried the rubber ring and it was indeed
pushed in too far. As you advised, I pulled it away from the panel and the
dial is noticeably smoother now. Not quite as much as I would prefer but
certainly far better then before. Thanks!

Mike:

Make sure the rubber ring on the outside of the knob has not been pushed
back against the front panel.  Otherwise, there are no adjustments.

I have had inquiry as to how to add more drag.  My suggestion is, as
other companies have done, add a piece of closed cell sheet packing, in
the form of a 1" diameter washer with a 1/4" hole in the center.  Remove
the knob, 2 set screws under the rubber ring, put on the foam washer,
and put the knob back in place. To get more or less drag, just adjust
the knob with respect to the front panel.

Is there a way to adjust the drag on the main tuning dial of the Eagle? I
don't find anything in the manual about this. I find the drag too great
for
comfort and would like to loosen it up a little. Thanks in advance for
any
suggestions. 73, Mike W2IY
