I have my doubts about that one. Checking the path, about 60% is in=20
sunlight and the sun reaches 38 degrees elevation just east of 5R8. =20

It looks more like a short-path, just after the SM's sunset. Nice=20
contact, though.

SM5EDX replied:

Well ..spoiled my sleep today because was hearing n7jw n6ll w7ej
and others way after sunrise here...
Signals were coming short path, and n6ll I heard all day (took a two=20
hour break for lunch). Managed to work wb9z at0936z and ve5ra at
1033z (thats abt half hour before local noon).
So tried get westcoast guys attention for sunset here and it worked
just fine ... from 1425z to 1529z I worked w7am , n7ua,k6vx kb7v
w2vjn/7 and ve3iy/7 all shortpath...
First time I have managed work westcoast in the afternoon.
Taped the qso=B4s and when I played tape for sm5bhw on the fone-
he thought n7ua was me signing out "569" report hehe.....
Sunrise /set here today is 0739z - 1353z.

Had a great afternoon (kh6cc was peaking 579) and tried with kh8/
n5ols with not much luck -had BC qrm on the qrg for some stupid=20
reason -think he was there ,but qrm took him out..

160m at it`s best is a 24hrs a day work -when condx is down=20
best time to get some sleep hehe

ON4UN added:

I heard SM5EDX woprking a whole bunch of W6,s W7's and kl76's around 14:30
to 16:00 z at the end of the contest/. I could of course bnot hear anyhting
(2 hours b4 sunset here). I was dying from envy.

Summary:

It was SHORT path, not long path. I've seen this before from Colorado
but only to areas above the Arctic Circle like UA1OT, etc. This is much
more common on 80 meters but it proves the old adage that 160 openings
are really not that much different than the higher bands...just much more
infrequent. Long path between OH and W6/7 was done last year during=20
January but this was a short path opening. What was very unusual is that
it extended below the Arctic Circle to south Sweden (but interestingly not
to Belguim which is not all that far from Sweden). Interesting!
