Towerheads and Topbanders,

I want to thank everyone who answered my inquiry for locating a Great Circle
Map making program. There were many positive responses and I have summarized
them for you below. There were also many inquiries from other recipients
wanting the same information. I begin by listing all the web sites by URL and
finish with all the posted comments.

Thanks again for all the help.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

Bill N4ALG

Check out AZ_PROJ at:

http://www.xray.duke.edu:1080/az_html/azproj.shtml

it takes a bit of getting used to, but there's a lot in their package.

Hi Bill,

I think this is what you're looking for. I downloaded some software the other
day that prints out great circle maps from anywhere in the world. One can use
either prefix or Lat/Lon to define the center point. I have an old 386 and
Epson dot matrix printer and they printed out just fine. It does require
Windows 3.1 or greater. The file name is <GCMWIN21.ZIP> and can be downloaded
via FTP from <oak.oakland.edu/pub/hamradio/arrl/bbs/programs>. I hope this
helps.

The best great circle map program I've found is a windows program written
by SM3GSJ. Great detail and very configurable. Point your web browser at

on my web page there is freeware propagation program in java on the
web page, and downloadable for dos or windows that plots a great
circle map on your qth. as an added bonus it also plots sun rise/set
and high or lowband long or shortpath propagation predictions. my
propagation program will do a polar projection centered anywhere in
the world, and its free. no, you won't be able to trace the fjords in norway
when you are at the antipode, but you can see the sunrise/sunset
line and propagation predictions superimposed on it instead.

HI Bill,

Look on the internet, using Alta Vista, search for the keyword (Callsign)
NV3Z, and you will find a server which draws a custom Great Circle Map to
your specifications.....Scale, Center Lat, Long, country Borders, Lat
Long lines, compass rose, Gray lines.....all these parameters may be
specified in detail before the map is drawn for you on your screen or
your Laser Printer.....color printing options are even available...You
can get the software itself from the site, using FTP. These
guys should get an award for their great Website Great circle map server.

Bill,

The very best map software and propagation program that I know of is
DXAID by Peter Oldfield in Canada. It gives Mercator as well as
azimuthal equidistant maps that are EXCELLENT, with terminators and
auroral ovals. The auroral ovals are based on TIROS/NOAA satellite data
and show the variations with UTC and magnetic activity (Kp-index).

The program costs $25 US and may be obtained from:

                        Peter Oldfield
                        251 Chemin Beaulne
                        Piedmont, Quebec
                        J0R 1K0 Canada

Just tell Peter I sent you and he'll give you prompt attention.

73,

Bob, NM7M
