Here's an interesting short-term experiment.
N6TR (and others) have wondered about how different propagation is between
the 1.8-1.85MHz subband where most DX is worked and at 1.95-2.0MHz where
nothing ever goes on, DX-wise. The difference in frequency is about the
same as between 15 and 12-meters, so there might be significant
differences, particularly around sunrise/sunset and in times of
particularly low MUFs.
It would be very interesting to have, for a limited time (a week or two),
a 100-watt beacon transmitting in rapid sequence every 30kHz across the
160-meter band. (i.e., 1810, 1840, 1870, 1900, 1930, 1960, and 1990kHz)
If a single package was constructed, it could be taken/shipped around the
world as a series of experiments that we could all support and report our
S-meter readings.
What an interesting article THAT would make.
