Hi Gang,
If you don't wish to read my short message on my trip to ZF, close this message
and hit the delete key.
I had the pleasure to operate from the club station of ZF1A on Grand Cayman
from February 29 through March 5. I made more than 2,100 QSOs on 12 through
160 meters, about 80% on CW using my FT1000MP and an introverted L on Topband,
2 EL 40 beam, and a Pro77 for the other bands. Most days, I operated from
about 19:00Z through 01:00Z. The rest of the time was spent working on my tan
and enjoying the company of my very patient YL.
The Inv. L only has 2 radials and I was only running 100 watts. My first QSO
was with K7SV followed quickly by VE1ZZ (no surprise) and W4ZV. All told I
made 45 Q's on Topband. In the "loud" column I'd say it was a toss up for
W8LRL, W8JI, W4DR, VE1ZZ, K9DX and W4ZV. All you guys were very loud. I think
I picked out a few barefoot guys too. I only worked the band till 01:00Z each
day so I didn't have prime time conditions. I only heard two EU station, G3FPQ
and RA6AX. I called both but no joy.
I got the bug so I'm already planning another trip back to the island with a
focus on Topband. It should be rather simple to get a better signal by adding
some more radials under the Inv. L, taking a small amplifier and putting up a
few beverages on USA and EU.
Anyway, it was very exciting to be at the other end of the pileups. As
expected, the OPs on Topband were very well behaved. I'd like to thank each of
you for listening for my meager signal. I promise a better effort next time.
If you need a card, send it to my home call, K3UL.
73, Bob ZF2UL
