KL7HBK has generated a lot of excitement
giving several EU guys their last state, Zone 1
and a new DXCC the past few days. He is
operating from a work location at Deadhorse/
Prudhoe Bay (2nd Alaska Judicial District)
on the Arctic Ocean coast at 70.2N 148.6W
(grid locator BQ50).

From this location inside the auroral oval,
his signal only has one transition of the auroral
oval to reach Europe. This apparently accounts
for much less attenuation on his signal than NL7Z
and others farther south near Anchorage (~61 N).
Some of you may remember when Dan KL7Y
worked hundreds of EU stations while operating
from the same location several years ago.

In NA, we experienced the same conditions
when UA1OT was active from Franz Josef Land
beginning in 1987. From 81 N, Roman only had
one auroral zone transition to reach NA. He
worked all across the US and I believe only missed
WAS by one state (Utah?). In Colorado he was
audible anytime from our sunset to sunrise.

KL7HBK is probably the best chance for
anyone in Europe to work Zone 1. I haven't heard
how long he will be there but you should take
advantage of this special opportunity to work
KL7 while he is there. For those of us in NA,
please give EU a chance at this very rare state,
zone and country for them.

                         73, Bill W4ZV
