It very well may have been long path. I'm in No Cal; I made a half
dozen ZS QSO's on 40CW in a week early this Sept, all long path (my
Beverages told me so) between 1300Z and 1430Z. During certain months
of the year, it's quite common for 40 to be open to EU long path
from here in roughly the same time frame. And several years ago, I
worked EU long path on 30M from my /M driving through NV, also mid
morning.
It is also quite common for 40 to be open from here to Asia and
VK/ZL for 2-3 hours after sunrise, and to open to the east 2-3 hours
before sunset.
