Wow - what a great and slightly overwhelming response to my tower question !
I wish I had replied all, to the dozen replies I received in a few short
hours ! (so they would be archived online)
>>thank-you thank-you to all!
To paraphrase the replies I've received, it seems like I am on the right
track but not quite there.
I can probably expect a better match once I move the gamma connection up as
high as I can get it and out from the tower 2'-4' I may have to end up
going to an Ohmega match (maybe) if I can't match it.
Certainly more than 12 random length (80-130' each) ground radials will be
better than not.
I should reduce my tower clutter. I have the twin sloper off my tower and
also another dipole type antenna there too. (a CW160). Only problem with
removing the A-D sloper is I will no longer have a reference antenna !
Two kind fellows guessed my tower was resonant on 2.2MHz, and by golly, I
just measured it, and sure enough - it is ! I don't know why I didn't see
this before.(daft?) I have a local AM signal on 1.26MHz here and it's much
louder on the tower than the sloper so I thought (mistakenly) that the tower
was somehow with all my tower clutter (ie: wires), it was resonant way down
there. DOH !
On 1.83MHz, the very low, short loaded sloper is at the very least 6-12dB
stronger than the tower., . . .which STILL blows my mind. . . I thought on
RX the tower would kick it's proverbial butt, but not if it's not resonant I
guess.
Next weekend I hope to move the match up much higher and try to see where I
am at.
A sincere thanks fellows.
Cheers,
Mike VE9AA
