N4IS went beyond "reasonable" to build a very effective receiving system for 160 meters. Over time he has perfected the Waller Flag, which has an RDF of 12 dB. This is an extremely difficult antenna because of its low gain of -40 dBi. He has raised that antenna to 110 feet, to the top of his TX vertical, and turned it horizontal, where you get less noise but also even weaker signals. He has built a low noise transmission system form the antenna to to his receiver, with obsessive attention to detail (like running the coax is steel pipes, combined with a very good grounding system). And he has built a superior low-noise pre-amplifier. I have visited his station, and was amazed by its performance. The results were no accident.

There could be other examples but N4IS leaps to mind. He lives in FL and has
305 entities on 160. Maybe he worked some of them elsewhere, I don't know.
Or maybe he worked them 20-30 years ago, when worldwide noise levels were 20 dB
lower. :) And he does swear by his RX antenna.
