Great advice, Jeff! Among many things Stan observes, loss in decent feedlines is quite low at 1.8 MHz, and the advantage of location with respect to terrain, especially elevation and/or sea water can be significant. Also, N6BT, a fine engineer, has published experimental work to show that verticals very close to a drop-off perform well in the direction of the dropoff. ON4UN observed this decades ago in "Low Band DXing," published in several editions by ARRL. A great reference about antennas and propagation for Topband and the lower HF bands.
