This is the reason I hate ZNR's! They are a fire hazard looking for
someplace to happen. They are made out of a stack of single plate low
voltage devices, with the number of single devices determining the overall
breakdown voltage of the device. Thing is, with time and a few spikes here
and there, one by one, the single devices short out. As each one goes,
the overall breakdown voltage of the device decreases with time, until
finally the one goes and the voltage rating goes below the operating voltage,
with smoke and fourletterwords as the result. These things really are a time
bomb, and several house fires have been attributed to them...
