The mods are designed by Dave Leeson, (formerly W6QHS, now W6NL) and
can
be found in the following references:

The QST articles describing the mods are:

 November 1991 QST, pp 36-42
 October 1992 QST pp 65,66

The theory and another set of pictorials on the subject of the 40-2CD
as
well as other antennas can be found in Dave's book: Physical Design of
Yagi Antennas, published by the ARRL.

I have modified (++) and installed two 40-2CDs. I have also modified,
per Dave's suggested (++) upgrades, my 155CA and 205CA. These
 modifications work exceedingly well.

I suggest that you not only read the QST articles, but that you obtain
Dave's book as well. All of the above references were well used during
the modification process at the N3RR QTH!

The current version of the 40-2CD incorporates a couple of the insert
tube modifications suggested by Dave, so you won't need all of the
inserts if yours is new enough.

Also, there was an article in NCJ a couple years ago that described a
less complicated (and less expensive), and less capable modification.
I
can't seem to lay my hands on that issue right now, but I did review it
and concluded that I wanted the full 118 mph wind survival of the (++)
modifications described by Dave in his book and in QST.

If you have any questions regarding this, I will be glad to help. I
have
installed these two antennas on ring rotors and have added a 'lil N3RR
modification to the (++) as well.

 73!
