FYI - For those of you whose curiosity was raised by the recent
discussion of knots, the local Barnes and Noble bookstore had
the book "Handbook of Knots and Splices" by Gibson in its bargain
section ($7). It also covers steel wire rope, though the information
seems a little dated from what I've read on here - no mention of
preforms, etc. just the old bolt-on clips. I think B&N is a
national chain, but I don't know if the bargain selection is the
same everywhere.
