the data you are looking for comes from:

however, it is not available free on the web yet that i can find.
it is available via satellite or dialup lines by subscription.
the also sell detectors that you could install there to find out
for yourself if anything is too close.

you may do better with the weather channel, or just using something
like:
http://www.intellicast.com/weather/atl/nexrad/
(replace atl with a closer site code if that doesn't cover your
area)  that is updated every 1/2 hour.  it may not show lightning 
strikes but its pretty good for locating storm cells.
