Modern HF RX with wideband input and high first IF has no particular problems
with S-meter linearity as witnessed by few recent serious reviews in QST, CQ DL
and Radcomm magazines.  There are some ham experiments with IC's intended for
GSM portable telephones which measure RSSI received signal strength accurately
within 60dB range.  The only problem is to cover another 60dB on HF bands.
BTW while reading some comments on antennas, I got feeling that they were
discovered to fit computer modeling programs :-)  Lot of good research was
done without PC but the math involving complex integrals is not easy...
