I cannot speak to Heliax, but W3AU splices his aluminum jacket CATV line ala
VE1ZZ in that it is a straight forward approach.....with NO connectors to
worry about.

Here is how Ed does it:

expose the pin on each end of the splice by cutting back the shield and
dielectric....try and save the foam.

Next, take a piece of aluminum tubing whose ID is same as OD of the hardline
and slip it over one side of the splice.  solder the two center connectors
together....if you want to get fancy you can use some brass tubing from the
hobby shop that has an ID equal to the center pin's OD, otherwise solder them
"side by side".

Once the center conductor has cooled down, take the insulation/dielectric you
saved and recycle on top of the splice.

slide the piece of tubing over the splice, applying conductive goo to the
outside of the two shields and hose clamp it in place....waterproof the
seams, and voila
