Here is the collected wisdom on Beverages coming from my request for
real-world feet-and-inches build-it-now information:

Common info was: put feed coax on or in the earth, use ground rod (at
least, or radials) at far end on far side of resistor. Plus, 4 to 7 feet
in height, can stand some variation in both heights along the line and in
straight line/not straight line. Some said u need a gnd. rod at the feed
point also--- hooked to what? not said.
Gauge of wire not important, insulated or not is also ok.

540 min. 400 to 600 ohms + radials at gnd 9to 1 xformer*

580ft. 400 to 600 ohms, 2 watt carbon 9 to 1 xformer*
585ft. 400 ohm, carbon, 2 or more watts 9 to 1 xformer.

Variations: 4 to 6 ft. gnd. rods, one said use 50 ft radials on or in
earth at far end also.
Feed with 213 coax on or in the ground.
Most said to slope ends downward for 60 feet on both ends.
100 ferrite beads can be put over the feed coax to "spiff up the pattern".
One person with lots of tests insisted on 270 to 300 ohms at far end.
Same person said "no matching xformer needed at feed end."

from * above: for feed transformer, use UNUN (not BALUN) at 9 to 1 that
can be purchased from Radio-Ware, Palomar, or the kit from Amidon.

Prize for best all-around advice goes to W7EW or W7AT (couldn't decide on
one call, Lew?) for opining-- do not run the wire through your house, the
XYL (or whatever) will bitch. PS: Lew did not use the word "bitch."

Thanks to one and all for this great effort. And, NO SINEs, etc. de
