The HyGain traps have 4 plastic spacers inside each trap can. One is at
each end, just inside the end caps. The other 2 are amidships, near each
end of the coil itself. These spacers will not let water pass around
their perimeter, they are too tight. If the water gets a few centimeters
deep it can pass through the holes near the center rod.
These 4 spacers create 3 separate chambers that water can collect in.
Drilling holes in your endcaps will only drain the water between the
spacer and the endcap. Very little (almost no) space there. I believe
that drilling holes in endcaps accomplishes nothing. This is why the
weepholes are placed where they are on the bottem.
And if you crimp the ends of the trap cans, how are you going to
clean/refurb them next time your SWR is high? You won't be able to get
them apart anymore. Remember, the coils can only be slid out the end
without the screw. -pat
