Gang, Lets just say this if an airplane made out of Aluminum did not
flex itself in all directions, and I mean all then millions of people
including myself would not be here. A B-747 wing tip can and will flex a
total of about 8 to 14' according to gust loads and wing loading of the
plane depending on total weight. Fuel management is very critical to the
safe conduct of the flight to provide structural integrity of the plane.
I have over 20,000 hours as Pilot in 375 types of planes.
Been there done that
If I were in the market with the money I would not even hesitate to buy
an aluminum tower if it was designed to meet my requirements.
The ones that bad mouth them COME forward with the FACTS Just the FACTS
MAN. Like put up or shut up.
A B-747 made of steel would weight somewhere around 1.5 to 2 Mil. pounds
empty. We would have to use the Saturn 5 to get it airborne.
The lite weight guy (Aluminum) with over 400 PAX's 400,000 pounds of
fuel and the plane come in at around 888,000 at brake release. From
brake release to wheels in the well, flaps up on speed sked the fuel
consumption is about 10,000.
