My recommendation is to dig out the section and then paint it
thoroughly with a roofing tar or similar substance. It's a good practice for
when you bury a section in concrete too. Whether your soil is positive or
negative ph, a protective coating will prolong the life of the galvanizing
and the reliability of the base especially since you can't see the buried
portion.
