The famous Don Wallace, W6AM stated often that he never built
a transmitting antenna in his life; just receiving antennas that just
happened to be able to transmit.

He had the location; the old Press Wireless Rhombic farm near
Long Beach, CA. He had the ability to receive very well and was=20
a skilled listener., and an "A1" operator.
 It has often been said that the best filter ever
devised is the one between your ears. When you have all this going
for you, all you have to add is a very large transmitter to be a big =
gun..=20

Depending on how juicy the rare DX is on frequency will determine how =
far the
"wick" must be turned up to be a "big gun." Perhaps you have noticed
on 20 meters that when a "new one" appears that everybody needs
how big some of the "wicks" have become! The lack of a good location
and exotic antenna systems can easily be overcome by turning up the
"wick" as long as you can hear who you are trying to work.

"Tubes With Handles" are very plentyful and cheap on the surplus
market, and are in far more widespread use than one might think;
even in Europe, where residential 440 volt 3 phase residential service
is more economical than in the USA.

If you want to learn the identity of the top 100 big guns, just listen
on 14.195 the next time a new DXCC country comes on, and just
log the first 100 QSO's! These guys are not necessarily the "role
model" type. They just live to add notches on their "big guns."
