You can also use just one vertical dipole as described.  I have one for 80
meters using a tall tree.  I have the 30 degree sloping wire aimed at 45
degrees.  The pattern for one dipole element is essentially omni but with
more of a lobe centered on 45 degrees than the opposite direction.   I
worked E44 on SSB with one call on this antenna.

As with any vertical the antenna plays better with some form of ground
screen.
