Gary,
EIA/TIA-222-F (dated June 10, 1996)says you must use 8 foot (minimum)
galvanized steel 5/8" diameter ground rods.
There is no option for any other material.

I am about 3 or 4 weeks from pouring concrete. And I am still looking for
faster, easier, less expensive ways to complete my tower project. I have
scanned the archives, but can find no reference to/thread about using angle
iron as "ground rods".
My hole-digging-contractor said that he could 'drive' the angle iron into
the ground with his backhoe bucket... a la 'pile driver' style. Cooool...
better than me bustin' my butt with a sledge! BUT... would the angle iron
be 'conductive' enough? What about plating? Of course, the more I deviate
from 'standard' angle iron, the higher the costs involved. Would a
'copper-clad' rod offer a better conductive surface than standard angle
iron? Haven'y done the math, but the 1 1/2 to 2" angle iron HAS to have
more surface area.
It would appear the angle iron would facilitate connections. The holes in
the angle iron encourage the use of big bolts/washers... thus providing a
better (?) physical/electrical connection for ground wire(s) than the
'bug-style' clamps. [The preceding was a question!]
I have made note of the mini-water cannon/garden hose method. I will
certainly invest in parts to make this device. But the hard ground here in
the land of taxes (no... not Texas!) makes me dubious. The protracted dry
spell has not helped this situation.
Every time I eat those mushrooms I get these crazy ideas... but I can count
on the gurus of TT to bring me back to reality. Should I lay in a supply of
angle iron and fire up the backhoe??
