You're right about the manual.  I had missed that when I discovered the
problem last night.

I got a couple of suggestions identifying the motor that turns the display
as the likely problem.  K1TTT even has a complete write-up on his website
( with the
disassembly procedures.  I just took the control unit apart and gave the
small pulley on the motor shaft a nudge with a small screwdriver (per
K1TTT), and it started up at full speed, back to 180 CCW with the cable
disconnected.  I also blew out dust (not much inside) with compressed air.

It's working, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  Thanks for taking the time
to retype all of that when I hadn't opened my eyes!

My manual has this info under "Electrical Troubleshooting Data" on page 9:

Resistances between the pins of the rotator socket should be as follows:
   Pin 1 to pin 2: 0 to 500 ohms
   Pin 1 to pin 3: 500 ohms
   Pin 2 to pin 3: 500 to 0 ohms
   Pin 4 to pin 5: 6 ohms with the rotator in mid-range, 18 ohms
(polarized) with the rotator at either end of rotation.

At the controller socket, approximately 6 VDC should be present between pin
1(+) and pin 3.  Also, 8 to 24 VDC should be present between pins 4 and 5,
with the actual voltage depending on the Speed control setting, and the
polarity determined by the Right and Left switches.  If the Preset mode is
active, voltage between pins 4 and 5 will vary.

Note that the resistance checks at pins 1, 2, and 3 must be made with the
controller disconnected.  No, I don't know what (polarized) ohms are...
