I don't recall anyone saying half-slopers NEVER "work". What 
everyone was pointing out is the person asking the question had a 
bad situation, and why his situation was bad compared to other 
possible cases.

He had an antenna/tower combination that was very likely resonant 
on or near 160, and nothing at the top of the tower to act as a 
counterpoise.

The problem with single half-slopers is they totally depend on the 
impedance at the attachment point of the tower to work. That 
impedance is a function of how much "stuff" is hanging off the 
tower, MUCH more than it has anything to do with grounding at the 
bottom of the tower or things like feedline chokes.

Naturally there are systems that work, but from what I can see it is 
mostly just by luck rather than careful planning. 

I looked around for some references, but could find none. It is 
unfortunate that no one has written a good article about how to 
make half-slopers work.
