I bought an 85 foot Aermotor self supporting tower in the early 50's. It
came with galvanized bolts which were used in putting it up. The tower
was taken down a few years later and no problem with the bolts coming
apart. A friend gave me several boxes of stainless 3/8-16 and 3/8-24
bolts and nuts which were used in putting the tower up at a new
location. I did not use any lubrication on the bolts. When I took the
tower down for another move 5 years later, a large number of the bolts
seized in the classical manner. Start unscrewing the nut and it gets
tighter and tighter, then reverse the direction of turning and it gets
harder to turn, unscrew it a bit and it will not travel as far as the
first time. Eventually it will not turn either direction and will break
if you continue. I had to break most of the bolts to take it apart.
After that experience, I put the tower up with the original bolts and no
problems since.
An old machinist once told me that it is unwise to make threaded dry
joints with identical materials in both parts. Dissimilar materials or
plating or a suitable lubricant was suggested
