Barry,

Looks like I missed the original post by you, so I don't have your details,
however I second the motion
for an Inverted L.
I am on an acre lot (however not using all of it) and I have "L's" on 80m
and 160m.
I had about 27 1/4wl radials on 160m and 5/16th WL inverted L section is
roughly up 60 feet and more or less horizontal
about 100'.<< I say HAD because eventually I lost 7 or 8 radials (or parts
of them) from my wifes gardening or general yardwork, etc. etc. No
noticeable difference>>. This allowed me to use a large ~800pF air
variable at the bottom to tune out the inductive reactance and obtain a
perfect match. I have it set to a perfect match @ 1.835MHz, but can also do
the SSB portion (contests, etc.) by walking outside and making a small
adjustment to the cap. They say 5/16th wave "MAY" (emphasized, may) have a
slightly lower angle of radiation than the normal 1/4wl. I had just heard
this from several people but have no hard evidence to back this up (comments
welcome)
I have a small low-rpm motor that I will install this summer to turn the cap
remotely from the shack for those -30°C winter nights next year, brrrrrrr

The 80m one is more or less shaped like this:
\

"slanted" and also about 5/16th WL....same as the 160m one and works very
well.

I am 'sometimes' the first one through the pileup with a kW, but rarely ever
stay in a 80m/160m p/u very long, though I am not too active the past 3-4
years on the low bands. (it works well in other words)

I was one of the lucky ones to work VK0IR on 160m, beating out "some" very
notable w1/2/3/4 guys with this very simple antenna. Not braggin'...just
saying that it does work well for me. I am @ ~ 30'ASL next to a small lake
and cedar swampage so believe my ground is probably "above average" for the
low bands anyway.

My QTH sux for VHF though, hi hi!

Thumbs up for the Inverted L........
