I have an inductor with the same problem, needs cleaning periodically. This
got me thinking, is it possible to make the inductor slug tuned, with a piece
of ferrite that is inserted down the long axis of the coil? Or will this be
too lossy? Am talking about a variable L that will be used only on HF.

You've forgotten the most probably cause .. the 'slide' upon which the
roller moves is in need of contact cleaner! The contact between the
roller and that rod is difficult to clean!
