   One can also increase the finger space around connectors by not lining them 
up in a square grid of rows and columns.  Rather,
shift each row left/right so that the connectors in that row are mid-way 
(horizontally) between the connectors in the row
above/below.

   In other words, not this:

o-o-o-o
o-o-o-o
o-o-o-o

   but instead this:

o-o-o-o
-o-o-o-
o-o-o-o
