Since regulation is not required, almost any of the inexpensive 13.8 vdc
regulated (NOT computer type switching ) supplies with current capabilities
in the 6 amp range would provide you with typically about 20 volts dc - you
simply connect in across the bridge rectifier/filter cap before the
regulator circuitry. This won't be quite the 24 volts you asked for but
may do the job. I suggest you try something like this and see if it will
do the job. Without knowing the length and size of cable and what you are
turning, it's hard to say for sure.
Unless you are turning a very large antenna into a stiff wind, the current
draw is usually well less than 6 amps and a even a undersized transformer is
typically able to provide the current needed. I used a 16vac 1 amp wall
wart for demo purposes and was amazed how well it worked without showing
signs of heating.
Another alternative is just an 120 to 18 volt transformer - the AlfaSpid
control unit can accept either AC or DC. While you may not have an 18 v
unit, many older junk box transformers have a 12v and a 5 or 6 volt winding,
simply series these so they add and there you go...
I personally use two 12 volt gell cells with a trickle charger to run all 7
of my controllers. For the extremely long runs (500 to 1700 feet) with thin
wires I have, there is an option (the controller needs a small mod too) to
add in another 12 or 24 volts as needed.
