Pete, you might take a look at the type of helmets used by rock
climbers--they are designed to protect against (among other things) falling
rocks, so they should work for falling bolts, too. One highly respected one
is the "Ecrin Roc" made by Petzl (I'll soon have one).

REI sells it for $77, but I've seen it for significantly less--don't
remember where. Try a web search.
The standard disclaimer, of course, is that I don't recommend this--or any
other--helmet: I'm not the expert. I'm sure that someone will tell you
that a brim is ABSOLUTELY necessary, while someone else will say that's a
bunch of baloney. From time to time, experts do disagree!
Of course, helmets are on my list of things to wear when climbing, as are
safety glasses: I remember from many years ago that Ma Bell made her
linemen wear them while climbing because of the not-so-slight possibility
that one would stab one's eye with a screwdriver while working "strapped
in," particularly if they slipped and instinctively tried to hug the pole.

I have for years felt vaguely guilty working on a tower without a hard hat,
but the standard construction type are just too clumsy -- the suspension
harness inside makes them wobble around on my head, and I'm forever hitting
the front brim on the tower or antenna I'm working on, plus it restricts my
upward vision.
There *must* be something better -- recently I saw some "pro" tower guys
working in what looked vaguely like the "almost no helmets" that some
Harley guys like. Someone referred to them as hockey helmets, but they
looked more stripped down than that, with a pattern of holes over their
surface (perhaps for cooling?)
Any leads?
