Another good example is the small receiving loops with a sharp null
broadside to the plane of the loop.  As far as gain goes, they are pitiful -
at least 20 dB below even a mediocre vertical.  But steering the null to a
noise source can raise the SNR many dB above what the vertical can do.

To increase SNR you can either increase the S or decrease the N.  If you
change both in equal amounts in either direction, there is no net effect.
