Well in Chicago, In my high steel days, a spud wrench was a ratchet with a special size socket that fit the nuts on scaffolding connections.
I'm sure you've seen those metal frame scaffolds they build on the outside of tall building during remodeling and restoration.
If you look at some of the pipes, they have various metal clamps with swing open locks.
those locks have the nuts which will not unscrew off the bolts for safety.

Spud wrenches also frequently had a pointed handle end which was used to line up the holes in scaffolding or steel for bolting.

When I was up 40 stories or more, I tended to keep one arm around the beam and needed a wrench that I didn't have to use two hands to change sockets etc. LOL

Had dinner with the guy I got my novice license with back in '70 and he
always comes up with something.
After admitting he may the guy who had my long lost Rohn Industrial catalog,
he said he wanted to know what a 'spud wrench; was. He said it was
referenced on one of the Rohn drawings he saw years ago and always wondered
what it was.

Surely someone here knows or can make up a joke or two I can pass along?

Al
