also note that the problem may be engineering rather than materials.  or
possibly the engineering of the materials.  the really old telrex antennas
used an old aluminum alloy that was not as stiff as modern tubing.  when
the son 'upgraded' the designs to modern alloys the elements got stiffer
and started having vibration problems which resulted in elements literally
falling off of the antennas within a year or two of service.  same basic
mechanical design, just improved materials without studying all the
possible side effects.
