Yes - and it is a big problem.  The rebar rust, and the scale expands,
eventually causing the concrete to crack....

There are several write-ups that show nice pictures in "Corrosion
Engineering", published by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers
(NACE).

I may learn somethng here.....It is my gut level impression that buried
concrete in wet or damp ground absorbs moisture.  Isn't concrete porous,
easily absorbing water thorugh it's contact surface with wet ground?
