I recently had an HD-70 installed using the pad and pier option. A hole was 
dug big enough for the pad and forms were build for the pier (open at the 
bottom). The concrete was poured in the pier and also some around the edges 
for the pad. After a few days, the rest of the hole was backfilled.

After it was all done, the concrete guy (who also did the forms and rebar) 
told me it would have less expensive to do the solid block, because of the 
extra labor was considerably more than the cost of the extra concrete. But 
the smaller footprint appealed to my wife.
