By visual and aural senses, as well as physical evidence
like deep pits in spark gaps or holes burned in aluminum
tubing. A direct hit is a sizzling pop that occurs exactly
in step with the flash. I can also tell because CRT's in the
house will become magnetized and lose color purity.
