In the past I have seen hams use an old fashioned car jack, not the
scissors one that comes in a lot of cars now, but the old bumper jacks.
They take a short piece of chain with links big enough to fit over the
ground rod and securely clamp a pair of Vise Grips just above the chain,
and then hook a link of the chain to the hook on the bumper jack (where
the curved piece of steel would attach that fits under the bumper, then
just jack away. then move the whole thing down as the rod comes up,
repeating as the jacking mechanism reaches the top of the jackstand pillar.
