Van, this line bothers me: "Obviously if I put it back up then it is not
north when I point it north as it has rotated." If my interpretation of
your comment is accurate, your problem is not inside the rotor, but
external to the rotor's brake and gear train.
While it is possible that your brake wedge is upside down or that the
springs are weak, or that one spring is broken (those springs are what keeps
the wedge extended), or even if there is a problem of some other sort with
the braking mechanism, if the antenna weight is turning the rotor when you
get it to horizontal position...the rotor's internal azimuth potentiometer
should track with it...that pot is mechanically coupled to and driven by the
rotor 'bell housing'...so that, when you put the tower back up and turn on
the rotor controller, the indicator should tell you where the antenna/rotor
combo is currently pointed.
If you're losing sync between the pot, i.e., the rotor, and the antenna,
either your antenna mast is slipping inside the upper rotor clamp...the
antenna is slipping around the mast at the boom/mast couple...or, (you said
you have a tubular tower)...the rotor's mast mounting adaptor is slipping
around the tower.
