Another non-wire option is "Poly Stakes" from Home Depot.

They are 9" long poly stakes used for holding lawn edgings or 
pavers.  Six in a package for $2.29 online.  They look like 
one could simply wrap the radial around one every 5 to 10' and 
push into the ground by stepping on it.
