[TowerTalk] LDF 4-50 connectors cleaning?

I have some LDF 4-50 connectors that are tarnished, that I will be using on
50 and 144 Mhz. The center pin will be easy to clean but what about the
threads for the shield? 
How importent is it to clean shield? If you have cleaned these
successfully, let me hear how you did it.
