Regarding Denny's post of the loosened guy wires --

Anything is possible at any time folks -- not to take up too much bandwidth
with an anecdote regarding mysterious guy wire separations ..

In 1979 I was employed part time at a commercial FM station as
engineer/announcer as in those days "a ticket" meant something .. we were
the #1 AOR (album oriented rock) station in the market -- one Saturday night
after some "jimmy" & "Zep" the off air monitor went QRT.. plate current went
to overload & the transmitter shutdown.. since the studio & transmitter were
couple miles apart it was decided by the GM to wait & check out the failure
before sign-on.. closer inspection during the early morning hours revealed
our 525 footer was no longer vertical, well 40 feet was, at least 485 feet
were in a crumpled, sorry state of affairs laying across the field where the
transmitter shack was located ..

Seems as though one of our 14 year old "fans" while listening to the evening
tuneage found some cannabis .. he and a friend while under the inhalation
influence of such, then found a hacksaw at one of the parents garage --
thinking it would be "cool" to see what would happen if, he and his friend
scaled the 10 foot fence surrounding the transmitter site & the fence around
the guy points and hacksawed on the common anchor bolt of one leg ..
somewhere in the process of sawing the laws of physics took over ..
somehow -- neither were hurt or injured -- and it took about 2 days of solid
police work to locate the juvies ..

The owner of the station went to court and asked for leniency, we just put
them to work for the next XX years doing whatever needed to be done to pay
for the damage, translated, they had an after school job for a long time ..
which I guess it worked out as one of them got his "ticket" and found his
way into larger markets as an announcer .. .

Point being -- anyone can take all the precautions necessary -- all the
expertise, knowledge and safe guards can not protect anything or anyone from
stupidity ... good luck with whatever you decide to do ..

Cheers de SLM//
