I used a 40XK for two DXpeditions and it is a great little vertical. I sold
it and have ordered the relay control version with a switch for 40-30-20.
You still have to manually change the T-bars for 17-15-12-10, but I also
have a relay controlled Sigma GT-5 that covers those bands.

Both of these are quite good alternatives when you are space limited and
cannot put up a BigIR or other full size antenna, or a dipole or inverted
vee.

Of course, don't expect to be very competitive in a national or world
contest. I used the GT-5 during the CAQP on 20 and 15, and had a lot of
fun. I was set up in the back yard with a portable rig, practicing for the
JOTA. I had worked TXQP two weeks before using a C-3 at 150 feet on 15, and
running 1.5KW. One of the CA stations who had worked me during TXQP told me
my power was way off. He laughed when I told him I was in the back yard
with a portable rig on the little GT-5. But hey, he could still hear me!

What antennas are in use for urban contest operating? I've used random
wires, Hamstick dipoles on a TV mast, and a Force12 40XK Vertical (great
antenna, but has to be reconfigured for different bands).

My lot is about 50 X 70 ft, with no trees or other existing antenna
supports, and not a lot of room to run radials.
