Self supporting coils are a decent idea but I don't have the materials
like I do with the PVC/wire coils. Also, the coil needs to be pretty
dimensionally stable, which I think would require pretty substantial
tubing and a very large coil to get the inductance I need. Sounds
like a great idea for higher HF or wider bandwidth antennas; maybe
aluminum tubing with a few line supports would work OK.

Jim, good point on the grey PVC needing to meet some electrical
standards, even if it's just at 60Hz. I'll give it a try and report
back, though I don't run high power and doubt I could measure
particularly small variations in coil Q, so I don't know how much I'll
have to say. Other system losses (ground) will certainly swamp the
coil losses in this *particular* application. I just like to know what
I'm desiging around.
