I was looking for a paper on a lightning field simulator developed by
some scientists at Erico (mfr of all sorts of lightning protection
equipment) and turned up a lot of other interesting stuff.
There's a lot of good articles at:
is a good discussion of modern theory on where and how many air
terminals you need (talking about the problems with the old "cone of
protection" and the "rolling sphere" methods).
One interesting development is a sort of coaxial cable designed for
the lightning rod (air terminal) down conductor to reduce the "side
flash" problem from inductance in the wiring:
There's also some papers on TVSS (transient voltage surge
suppressors) that are of interest.
