I use the Short Carolina 80 version of the carolina windom.  This is a
better version for DX (broadside) and within 1200 miles omni.  This antenna
was originally called the Carolina beam and Radio Works realized that its
not really a beam but contains some of the vert radiation that has been
critized by W4RNL but written about nicely by W6SAI before he passed away.
It works well broadside but it has to be up at over 45 feet.  At 60 feet it
preforms as well as a a 80 half square and works well on 20 and 17 (but not
as good as a beam!!).  The SWR is below 2 to 1 on all bands if the 80 meter
portion is set to 3575 as per Radio Works settings.  Its about 3 to 1 on
3800 so a tuner is required there.

I have a friend in Louisiana who has the Carolina 80 windom at only 45 feet
at the center  (Rohn 25) and about 20 feet on both ends.  This antenna works
well on all bands and his internal tuner is all he needs.  He recently made
DXCC on 30 meters and during the Louisiana QSO he was the loudest station
form there on 40 CW and SSB (he was the top in state score) and all he runs
is an IC 761 barefoot.

If you only can install one antenna  the Carolina windom or Short 80 version
is an excellent choice.  The higher the better!
