I have built several 3 element beams where I have used a gamma match as
well as the hairpin match. I have built the gamma match using two pieces
of tubing, one 3/4" and the other 1/2" with a piece of 5/8" acrylic as
the insulator. I have built these to the dimensions shown over the years
in the ARRL antenna book using this type of construction. When the final
adjustments are made, the shorting strap is usually a good 12" or more
toward the boom from the far end of the outer gamma tube which, in my
case is the smaller tube. I probably should have done this for
experimentation but at the time, I didn't want to chance upsetting a
good match once I found it. How would it affect the match if I cut off
the excess gamma rod that extends past the shorting strap? Would the
same answer apply to the hairpin match if the excess rod is removed
beyond the shorting bar?
