Hi Dave,
Check with the manufacturer to be sure. As an example, Wintech says to use
the following with their worm gear winches. Not sure if you are using a worm
gear reduction.

 For temperatures -20° to 50° F (-29° to
10° C) use a multipurpose lithium-based EP 1 grease. For
temperatures 30° to 120° F (-1° to 49° C) use a multipurpose
lithium-based EP 2 grease.

Hi Folks,

...performing annual maint. on the old crank-up and this is the first year
we've thought to check the oil level in the crank-up reduction gear.  Have
no documentation on the oil used in these gear boxes.  Suggestions are
welcome.
